We have many families here in Sayler Park who don’t have access to reliable transportation, so our SBHC has developed into a family practice. One family, who also has a student at the school, brought their 9-month old daughter in for a well child check. This child had received zero vaccines since birth due to the father’s personal views. During the well child check we discussed at length the importance of vaccines not only for the child, but for the entire community. We came to a compromise and the father agreed to the child receiving the state required vaccinations. The mother cannot drive and the father works, so our SBHC is close and convenient where the mother is able to walk to our health center and get the required vaccinations that her child needs. She has received her first round of vaccinations, and we have her scheduled to receive the second round within the next week.
